Encounter, 7pm, Radio National: Are your boots made for walking? Good! But what about your mind? Certain forms of meditation require stillness, solitude and quiet but others, such as Bagua - Chinese circle walking - and branches of Zen Buddhism, combine motion with thought. Fair enough! If health professionals insist walking is the best exercise for the body why shouldn't it also be beneficial to the mind? Henry David Thoreau was an advocate of contemplation in motion and, given humans have only been upright and mobile for about 200,000 years, there's an argument that much of our best thinking is done on the hoof.
